Name: Elizabeth
Canon: Bioshock Infinite
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: Post game, pre Burial at Sea
Number: 080
Setting: Bioshock Infinite Elizabeth’s story.
History:
There are two ways to tell Elizabeth’s life: The one the game shows you and the one that happens in a kinda-sorta logical way. For the purposes of making this part of the app the most possibly understandable I will be going by the second, therefore I must mention that the following paragraphs are spoiler heavy.
Elizabeth was originally born as Anna DeWitt, daughter of Booker DeWitt, the main character of the game, nineteen years before the events of the game, “Anna’s” mother died on childbirth, which in turn made Booker fall into depression, drinking in excess and betting way too much, amassing a pretty big debt. This combined with DeWitt’s violent behavior as a Pinkerton Agent (something along the lines of a policeman-military service) got him expelled. Broke and unemployed, Booker was approached by Comstock through Robert Lutece; Comstock was willing to pay all of Booker’s debts in exchange from Anna. Booker accepted at first, but immediately changed his mind after letting Anna go, which ended up in him struggling with Comstock as they tried to pass Anna through a portal to Comstock’s reality, which resulted in Anna’s pinkie finger being severed as the portal (a “Tear”) closed.
Anna was then renamed Elizabeth and raised by Comstock on the floating city of Columbia, who publicized her as his heir and the “Lamb of Columbia”, the one that would save them and cast judgment upon the world below. When Elizabeth started to exhibit the power to create and control Tears she was moved into the Monument Island, where a device to keep her powers diminished, called The Siphon was created once she reached puberty so that Elizabeth could be properly controlled. The Lutece siblings also created Songbird, and gigantic mechanic bird-like creature that was both Elizabeth’s warden and only friend, getting her books and keeping her company, yet also making sure the girl would never try to escape.
Elizabeth didn’t have an easy time growing up; while the general populace had been told that she had been the product of the union between Comstock and Lady Comstock, who had been in her womb for only seven days, Lady Comstock fully believed that Elizabeth was the product of an affair between Comstock and Rosalind Lutece. This, combined with Elizabeth’s power over Tears was fundamental in her isolation in Monument Island and the fact Elizabeth would never get to see people until she was fully indoctrinated. Elizabeth grew up alone in Monument Island until she was nineteen, with scientists keeping constant surveillance on her (without her knowledge) as the only humans being around, although she didn’t know this. Songbird was the only presence she interacted directly with, and over the course of the years she grew to despise the creature as it was keeping her prisoner in the island.
Until one day, in came Booker DeWitt. Because of he had had to travel to another reality to go for Elizabeth, his memories were blurred and he didn’t remember the original purpose of his mission (to rescue his daughter), instead remembering the words that had prompted his concession of Elizabeth in the first place, “gives us the girl and wipe away the debt”; he believed that he had been sent to recover Elizabeth for the sake of someone else, and that his debts would be cleared once he brought her to New York. Elizabeth reacted poorly to his initial attempts to take her with him, but after being attacked by Songbird she was left with little choice. Elizabeth and Booker’s partnership had a very rough beginning though, as she attacked him when she learned that he wasn’t going to take her to Paris. After some chasing and a lot f shooting, Booker agrees to take Elizabeth to Paris, or to at least try to get them out of Columbia.
The task is easier said than done though, as Booker needs to help Daisy Fitzroy with her ploy to bring Comstock down before she hands over the ship they require to escape, and for that they need to get her the weapons needed to deal the attack. Elizabeth and Booker travel through Finkton, the place where the gunsmith needed, Chen Lin, is supposed to be; during this time they discover a diary by Lady Comstock where she writes her suspicions about Elizabeth being a “bastard” of Rosalind, clearly stating that she is not her mother. They eventually find a dead Chen Lin, but the Lutece siblings appear out of nowhere, explaining to them that Elizabeth can take herself and Booker to another reality where Chen Lin might be alive, as a Tear is present near his body. Realizing it might be a one way trip, they both travel through the Tear and find Chen Lin at his fabric, although having died in another reality has made a number in his head, as he keeps working even though there are no tools in his fabric. Booker and Elizabeth travel to a Shantytown below the factory, where they have been told the tools have been taken. They indeed find the tools, but soon realize they can’t move them by themselves, until Elizabeth discovers a Tear to a world in which the tools are not being held. Travelling there, they find a reality in which the Vox Populi (Fitzroy’s movement against Comstock) is already attacking, first Fink, and eventually Comstock.
With their deal covered, Booker and Elizabeth think they would now be able to obtain the ship they need to leave, but several things in the reality they find themselves are different; as they return to Chen Lin’s factory they find him and his wife dead, product of the Vox Populi no longer needing their services. They also learn that in this reality Booker is a martyr of the Vox Populi, having already died in an attack against Comstock. Once Daisy finds him alive and well, she orders him to get killed, as having a martyr alive and walking would do no good to them. Booker and Elizabeth chase after Daisy, who plans not only to kill Fink, but also Comstock and everyone that gets in her way without discrimination, only to finally get to her as she murders Jeremiah Fink. She’s about to kill his son when Elizabeth intervenes, killing her instead. Booker and Elizabeth are about to leave Columbia when Songbird finds them and attacks them, forcing the ship to crash down in Emporia, Columbia’s shopping district.
Having decided that both Comstock and Daisy are equally bad and poisonous for Columbia, Booker and Elizabeth decide to confront Comstock and stop him, as well as making Songbird stop its chase after them. They find the entrance to Comstock House blocked by a lock that requires Lady Comstock’s fingertips, but as they go to get them from her crypt (something Booker was slightly against doing so, although Elizabeth was fully into it), but they are stopped by Comstock, who has prepared a device that brings Lady Comstock as a Siren, a creature in a flux between life and death. Long story short, they had to go on a wild goose chase finding different Tears caused by Lady Comstock’s appearance. They collect all the Tears as they learn more about the tensions between Comstock and his Lady. They have a final confrontation in which Elizabeth manages to get some closure with Lady Comstock, who tears open the door keeping them from going to Comstock House.
They don’t get too far though, as Elizabeth is abducted as they reach Comstock House, where she is held down and tortured into submission. Booker manages to save her though, although he meets a version of her that didn’t quite make it, who further aids him to find a way to control Songbird. After being rescued, Elizabeth decides to go after Comstock and kill him herself, but Booker tells her he will do it himself. Together they board Comstock’s ship, The Hand of the Prophet. Booker and Elizabeth fight their way up the ship until they Comstock, who doesn’t put up a fight, but questions Booker’s mission and asks him to reveal his past, something he can’t quite remember. Booker then drowns Comstock and tells Elizabeth they’ll destroy what’s left of Monument Island, where The Siphon is still active and keeping her powers contained. They fight one last wave of the Vox Populi trying to bring down Comstock’s ship before they manage to destroy The Siphon, fully restoring her powers.
With The Siphon gone, Elizabeth gains full access to her powers, she takes Booker on a trip through his past, in which she shows him the different realities and different paths that can be taken, as well as the ones he took; she shows him how he gave up Anna, and how Anna became Elizabeth; because she lost her finger in the rift, Elizabeth exists in multiple realities, thus giving her the ability to control Tears. Upon realizing what he had done, Elizabeth reveals to him that he is the source of everything that has happened, and that the only way to prevent it happens again was to end it at the source; him. Therefore Elizabeth, joined by different versions of herself, drown Booker.
And that’s where Elizabeth is coming from.
Personality:
Elizabeth’s isolation has had to different effects on her; on the one side, she retains much of the innocence and naivety that a life without interaction has granted her. Despite of the events of the game, Elizabeth is far less tainted by society. She is idealistic and noble despite the circumstances, and her sense of justice is as strong as it gets. Elizabeth will do the right thing, no matter the cost. The same naivety plays against her though, as she will go to whatever lengths necessary to do right, even if it puts her at odds with others or hurts herself in the process. She's strong willed enough to stand her ground, but she is equally stubborn about her beliefs and the way things should work. It doesn't come easy for Elizabeth to admit she's wrong about something, usually because she's so intelligent the possibility of her being wrong seems very distant in her mind. Words and time will always bring her to accept her mistakes, and she's capable of showing humility and most importantly, to learn from her mistakes.
The other thing her isolation has made for her is forcing her to mature far beyond her time. She is far stronger than most people would take for granted, emotionally speaking. Elizabeth might be innocent, but she’s not deluded about her situation and she doesn’t make petty excuses when things are bad, and takes everything as logically as possible. Elizabeth is capable of making difficult decisions. She’s very intelligent and well read, usually being able to put her knowledge to use even in the direst of situations, proven when she constantly aids Booker as they fight their way through Columbia. She uses her wits and cunning to aid Booker, but also to keep herself out of harms way; the game is very clear that Elizabeth does not need our protection, going as far as saying "she can take care of herself", thus putting her on a different level from your usual female companions that make the time of a character in need to be escorted. She's not a fighter, but Elizabeth knows how to pick her fights all the same, not taking unnecessary risks if possible.
Having grown away from people, Elizabeth initially swayed between complete trust (mixed with wonder and awe) to complete distrust. She doesn’t trust Booker all the way until he risks his life for her, in front of her. She also learns to be wary of people and their intentions, no matter how noble they look. Things were pretty much black and white when we first meet Elizabeth, but as she travels with Booker she’s exposed to a world of grays, which ultimately conclude in her decision to kill Booker for the greater good. Elizabeth gains knowledge of what happens in several different realities, quickly growing world weary and detached from the events that surround her. She’s exposed to a lot of “bad endings” and that toughens her up, but also shield her from getting too emotionally involved in what she does, basing her motives and actions into “what’s best” rather than “what would make me feel better”. She has lost her father only after finding her again, and she was the one that had to kill him; that leaves an emotional scar that will affect the way she relates to other in the future; actually, Elizabeth takes on an attitude that keeps others at arm’s length, always making sure to not get too personal with them.
In spite of her best efforts to remain aloof and unaffected by the several realities she has been made aware of, and the fact she can't do anything to help many of them, Elizabeth is a caring soul. She will risk her own safety for the sake of those she deems in need of help, and she will bring hell to anyone she finds abusing of others. Elizabeth remains honest and hasn't been corrupted by the events of her life, or even by her immense power; she might prefer to reveal less than to lie, and she doesn't like to deceive others, although if put against a wall about the subject she will manipulate as needed. Although initially repulsed by violence, Elizabeth has grown used to see it and use it when needed, although she's never going to be a fan, always trying to find alternatives to it whenever possible.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Eizabeth can create and control Tears. Tears are rifts between realities, transcending not only time, but also space. Tears vary in size and duration, and sometimes they can only be found at specific places, connecting to specific times and realities.
At the same time, Elizabeth can look into different realities and see their different outcomes, or what’s needed to be done in order to change them. This ability is some way of cosmic awareness.
In the ship, Elizabeth’s power will be limited to only being able to move through space (moving through time will be a mod approved thing, if it ever comes up as a possibility), and her knowledge of different realities will be also reduced. She won’t be able to create Tears connecting to the outside the ship (not without mod approval) and she won’t be able to make a Tear to somewhere in the ship she hasn’t been to before. She will also be able to tell when other characters come from alternate realities from her own canons (be it AUs and/or characters from games where decisions shape the way things play out, etc) although the specifics will be blurry to her.
Inventory: Dress, set of lockpicks. Her pendant.
Appearance: As she appears in the game.
Elizabeth is 5’6’’, slim and with short black hair, which can be seen to have been cut rudely. She has a round face and clear blue eyes, as well as a delicate nose and full lips. She’s in full transition between a girl and a woman, exhibiting curves yet still retaining a fresh and young air. She's missing her pinkie finger from her right hand, and has a circular scar between her shoulder blades.

She should have looked deeper.
When the transition first happened, Elizabeth wasn’t scared. She wasn’t surprised, she wasn’t even speechless. Once she was out of the tube and walking around, Elizabeth was furious. She could have seen this reality, this outcome, but her mind wasn’t on it. Sure, it would have involved looking in deeper and further than anyone would have ever though reasonable (she was coming from 1912 after all) but the fact was, this could’ve been under control, maybe.
But now she was stuck there and her powers weren’t doing what she wanted. She hated it when her powers didn’t do exactly what she told them to, she had gone through hell to get them back. So yes, anger was paramount among her feelings. Walking down a hallway, a hand always against a wall, Elizabeth was counting: steps, doors, lights, tiles, everything. She was committing the ship to memory; it would definitely come in handy if she had to fight her way out.
Times like these, she could use Booker. It was pretty much the same situations they were stuck back then. Sure, if you looked at it objectively it was also Booker’s fault, in a way…but Elizabeth couldn’t blame the man that had rescued her, one way or another. She couldn’t blame her father, not after she had had to drown him herself. At least, she told herself while taking a turn, hand always against a wall, at least Booker wasn’t going to be brought into this mess, right? At least the man would have the peace of mind he deserved. That managed to soothe her anger a bit.
Finding out the dead had no special rights was going to make a number on her.

[ It takes some tinker, but after a few trials and errors, Elizabeth’s figure appears. She seems to have moved a bit already, taking in the surroundings. Rather than looking scared, there is something fierce and intense behind her eyes that she tries to keep down, yet fails a bit as she can’t help but scowl at her assumed public for a moment before composing herself.
She still has manners mind you. ]
Hello? Hello, I think this is working properly now. My name is Elizabeth, I have been recently brought here, much against my will, but I believe this to be the way for all of us, correct.
[ On the other hand, some people have no manners, like those that brought her over the ship. Sigh. ]
I won’t waste your time with petty complaints and useless demands, I have no interest to appeal to your pity. What I would appreciate if the time of some of you to get me through some questions regarding our current situation. When, where and why we are here seem to be the more pressing matters at the moment.
[ She’s being reasonable, right? At least she believes that to be the case. ]
I have little to barter with in terms of favors, but I happen to be extremely well read in a number of subjects, so I may be of use in some particular area, if you’ll have me.
That would be all. Thanks in advance.
[ Phew, she kept it cool. Elizabeth sighs and cuts the feed. ]
